Movie Recommendation Of The Week: Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008)

I think it is pretty obvious why I have picked these films today. 'The Dark Knight Rises' arrives in cinemas on Friday and it would be a crime to walk into the cinema without knowing the full story (hence why this week there are two films rather than one. Warning this post contains spoilers.

First we have 'Batman Begins' the 2005 movie directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Blale as Batman, Liam Neeson ans Ra's Al Ghul, Michael Caine as Alfed and Cillian Murphy as Dr. Crane/The Scarecrow. This film explores the origins of Batman, starting with Bruce developing his fear of Bats and then the death of his parents when he is still a young boy. In his adult years he runs away from Gotham to explore the criminal underworld, returning after being trained by the League of Assassins (leaving them after a small dispute). We then see the development of Batman and his mark upon Gotham.

I didn't truly appreciate this movie until I saw 'The Dark Knight', because 'Batman Begins' dealt with all the origins and character development so we fully understood Bruce Wayne/Batman and it gave Nolan plenty of time to develop The Joker. Looking back now, 'Batman Begins' is a brilliant film, bit slow in parts but overall it is one of the best Batman films ever made. A solid 8.5/10.

The masterpiece! 'The Dark Knight' is considered to be one of the best comic book/superhero films ever made, with a great story and spotless acting. Heath Ledger creates a Joker never before seen. Jack Nicholson may have portrayed The Joker really well in Tim Burton's 'Batman', but Ledger's character was completely different, rather than being a criminal who is deformed in an accident with chemical waste, his character is modern, is realistic, he is a terrorist with a liking for the theatrical (like Batman). We never find out the origins of this character, he just appears, there is mystery behind him, he keeps telling different versions of how he got those scars. The film also introduces Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Eckhart's character is much better than the one played by Tommy Lee Jones in 'Batman Forever', with this one we see how he becomes Two-Face, we actually get the know him as Harvey Dent first, it doesn't just jump into the terrible accident that turns him into a psychopath. Obviously I have to talk about Christian Bale as Batman, in 'The Dark Knight' we see him struggle with an enemy that has no rules, he is afraid that he will have to break his one rule in order to stop this man before he tears Gotham apart. He has an internal battle against his responsibilities as Batman, and his feelings towards the woman he loves. Bale is easily the best actor to play Batman, which is a good achievement because all the actor who have played the role have been good (apart from George Clooney). This films gets a 10/10 from me, it's rare that the film world prefers a supporting actor (Ledger) rather than the lead (Bale).

Seriously, everyone has to see these films as least once in their lifetime, they are the type of films that will be looked back on in the future, all superhero films are now compared to 'The Dark Knight'. It set a nbew bar of realism for future superhero films.

On Friday 20/7/12 the conclusion to this epic trilogy ends. 'The Dark Knight Rises' introduces Tom Hardy as Bane (the character was previously in 'Batman & Robin', the worst Batman film ever made) and Catwoman (who was last seen in 'Batman Returns' the darkest of the Batman films, one of Tim Burton's better films). Christian Bale returns as the lead role, along with Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman (as Lucius Fox) and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon. The films also introduces Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, a young police officer that catches the eye of Gordon, because he sees something of himself in Blake, he represents the idealism that Gordon and Wayne once held, but soon lost in their battle against crime,. Apparently we will be seeing Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson again, which could be interesting. I can't wait to see this film, it has a very difficult challenge ahead with two iconic Batman movies to surpass. I just hope Nolan hasn't gotten lazy. In Nolan we trust Batman fans.
