Weekly Blu Ray Review: The Departed, Total Recall and The Expendables

This week (beginning the 9/7/12) I have indulged in three films which I believe, are examples of films with amazing casts. It may be surprising that I am not reviewing 'The Dark Knight' on blu ray with the sequel coming out on Friday,  but I'd rather re-watch that film closer to the time, probably Thursday, so that I am fresh for 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

The Departed (2006)
Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and martin Sheen, does this film even need a story to make it awesome? Well as it turns out, it does have a story, and a bloody good one. The acting is top notch, the chemistry between the characters is the best I've ever seen in a movie. Nicholson and DiCaprio portray the two most interesting characters, crime lord and a cop pretending to be a crook, the tension the two create between each really shows their skill as actors. As for blu ray quality, it looks great, with the exception of a few scenes, it sounds really good, especially the scenes where the title music plays, Scorsese put this in to play louder than anything else in the film, which is very strange, it goes from a  fairly quiet conversation scene, to a jail scene with this music blasting at the audience. The special features this film comes with vary from additional scenes, with Scorsese's introduction, the origins of Nicholson's character (which was based on a real life gangster), a look at the crime culture of italy and a look at the real life boston mob. Plus the theatrical trailer, so this is a really good blu ray of an awesome film, it's a proper mans film. I'm going to give it a 9/10.

Total Recall (1990)
One of Schwarzenegger's best film, because it isn't just action all the way through (well most of it is) but there is a well thought out story that runs along with it. A remake of this classic comes out later this year, I'm against remakes of Schwarzenegger films to be honest, they come under their own genre. The original has set a bar that the remake will struggle to beat. The blu ray quality of this is decent, the sound and picture are decent, but could have been better, I know that there is another blu ray of this film coming out later this year that has been completely re-done and is supposed to look a million times better than this one, now that I can't wait to watch, because even though this one doesn't look as good as it could, it still looks pretty sweet. The biggest disappointment with this product is that it doesn't have any special features, which is abysmal. I really hope the special edition has at least some special features. A wasted opportunity here, due to the fact that it has no special features, I am only going to give this blu ray a 5.5/10.

The Expendables: Extended Director's Cut (2012 director's cut for the 2012 film)
You thought 'The Departed' had a good cast, how about Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li Dolph Lungen, Jason Statham, Micky Rourke, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger? i can't even describe how good of a cast this is, the cast mixed with the immense action, completely distracts you from the fact that the story is rubbish. This is the greatest director's cut I've ever watched, the quality of the picture is top notch, maybe drops for a split second every now and then and the sound is great. It comes with ten minutes of extra footage! I'm not going to spoil it for you, but ten minutes more of 'The Expendables' is always good footage. The special features are very extensive, it comes with a making of 'The Expendables' documentary that looks really deeply into the acting, the stunts, the effects, the script, pretty much everything that went into making this movie. It also comes with a featurette about Stallone as a directer, which again is really interesting, it goes into why his failures in acting turned him towards writing and directing, and he goes through what he believes were the biggest mistakes in his life/career. We are also graced with an introduction by Stallone on the set of 'The Expendables 2' before we make it to the main menu, then we have the option to play an introduction by him before the movie starts, which is interesting too. Finally we have the music video for Sinner's Prayer by Sully Erna. don't quote me on this, but i think in this edition, Stallone changed the score slightly. All in all it is a really good purchase, if you're interested in how films are made and how directers operate, then buy this, you'll get to see how Stallone handles writing, directing and acting in a big budget action with with lots of actors who are very successful in their own films or sports. I'm quite excited for 'The expendables 2' now, especially with Schwarzenegger and Willis having a bigger role and the addition of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Liam Hemsworth (yes Chris Hemsworth aka Thor's little brother who was in 'The Hunger Games' for like five minutes, I think it'll be interesting to see him travel across to proper action films).I'm going to give this blu ray a 10/10.
